As we enter into March, I wanted to start monthly posts on the business, life on the homestead, our homeschool, tutorials, and other things happening behind the scenes in life!
For the first post, I wanted to go into why we're passionate about bringing toys (and more) into our business and how our decision to homeschool led us to this point!
Bringing Lessons to Life
In our homeschool, we believe learning is all about hands-on experiences and real-life connections. Whether it's diving into a living book, painting a watercolor masterpiece, or going on a walk to identify tracks - every lesson is an adventure. We primarily follow Charlotte Mason's methods while currently using (and LOVING) Ambleside Online. We cherish the community we've found and feel as though it's really working for us. But, only in the last few years have I been exposed to Waldorf teaching.
A brief overview of Waldorf education
Waldorf education is a holistic approach to learning that focuses on nurturing the whole child - mind, body, and spirit. Developed by Rudolf Steiner in the early 20th century, Waldorf teachings emphasize creativity, imagination, and hands-on learning. One of the key aspects of Waldorf education is the emphasis on age-appropriate learning. Educators strive to meet students where they are developmentally, allowing them to learn at their own pace and in their own way. Waldorf schools typically have a play-based curriculum that integrates arts, music, movement, and nature into daily lessons. Students are encouraged to explore their creativity through activities like painting, drawing, and storytelling.
It is important that we discover an educational method where people learn to learn and go on learning their whole lives. - Rudolf Steiner
Even though we don't plan for our children to go to a Waldorf school, we still decided to incorporate certain Waldorf principles into our homeschool by encouraging imaginative play, limiting screen time, and providing opportunities for creative expression through art and music.
A little bit of both!
Waldorf education focuses on holistic development, incorporating arts, music, and movement into daily lessons but on the other hand, Charlotte Mason emphasizes living books, nature study, and habit training. Put them together, and we've got a recipe for a truly unique educational experience. That's the beauty of homeschooling after all, isn't it? Being able to pick and choose the methods that inspire the parents while giving the child a well-rounded education according to their needs.
We all have need to be trained to see, and to have our eyes opened before we can take in the joy that is meant for us in this beautiful life. - Charlotte Mason
Creating a Magical Learning Environment
The decision to bring toys, craft materials, and books into The Nestling Co. was a long time coming, and we really have our homeschool to thank for it. Picture this: a cozy area filled with handmade wooden toys, colorful silks, and nature-inspired artwork. This is where the magic happens in a Waldorf-inspired homeschool. Add in some living books, nature journals, and a nature table straight out of a Charlotte Mason dream, and you've got yourself a whimsical environment of learning.
Wooden & open-ended toys exhibit traits that transcend trends, akin to classic literature or timeless art. They have the potential to serve as cherished heirlooms, creating lasting memories across generations.
Benefits of Open-ended Toys
Open-ended toys are pieces that have no defined outcome or a specific set of instructions. They are toys that encourage children to explore, experiment, and create in their own unique way. From building blocks and wooden figures to play silks and loose parts, these toys invite children to engage in open-ended play that fosters creativity, problem-solving skills, and social development.

Unleashing Creativity
One of the greatest benefits of open-ended toys is their ability to unleash creativity in children. When given the freedom to play without limitations, children can think outside the box, come up with new ideas, and express themselves in ways that are truly their own. Whether they are building a castle out of blocks or creating a world of make-believe with play figures, open-ended toys provide the canvas for endless imaginative possibilities.
-
Encouraging Problem-Solving Skills
Open-ended toys also help children develop essential problem-solving skills. As they engage in play, children are faced with challenges and obstacles that require them to think critically, experiment with different solutions, and adapt their strategies. Whether it's figuring out how to balance blocks to build a tower or navigating social interactions during pretend play, open-ended toys provide the perfect platform for honing problem-solving abilities.
-
Promoting Social Development
Furthermore, open-ended toys promote social development by encouraging collaboration, communication, and empathy. When children engage in open-ended play with others, they learn to take turns, share ideas, and work together towards a common goal. Through cooperative play with open-ended toys, children develop important social skills that will serve them well throughout their lives.

The Warmth of Wood
There's something magical about the way wood toys spark joy and wonder in both children and adults. The natural warmth of wood, combined with the simplicity of their design, encourages endless hours of play. The brands we intentionally decided to carry are passionate about where they source their wood, they embrace the beauty and tradition of the craft, and stress the importance of using non-toxic, natural paints and finishes.
The Nature Connection & Community
By combining open-ended toys with a connection to nature, we strive to foster a love for the environment, all while promoting sustainability and encouraging a sense of curiosity and exploration. We want to provide great ways of unplugging from screens and spending quality time together as a family. We strive to make these simple priorities of our homeschool and family life reflect directly in The Nestling Company! Forming a community, especially here in Maine, that helps families follow the child's lead while enjoying our beautiful landscape - in every season - is a dream for us.
Our unique property in Monmouth is filled with history and beauty and we can't wait to share more with you all. We imagine homeschool meet-ups, handcraft clubs, poetry tea times, and more. Our little 'soon-to-be' shop is just the beginning! If you've made it this far in the post, thank you. We can't wait to connect.
